The temperature that polar sea ice melts and freezes is the same set point in the north and in the south.  From where the north set point is and where the south set point is and where the temperatures are measured are different.  My house has two thermostats, Earth has three. The temperature where the thermostats are located, is regulated to the set point.  The temperature in rooms close and far from the thermostat have different temperatures, just like earth.  The regions in the north and the regions in the south, where temperatures are measured,  are in different locations and far from the thermostats.

The tropics also does have temperature regulation, but it is not based on ice and water, it is based on temperature and evaporation and clouds and rain. I don’t understand that one as well.  Ice and water is easier for me so far. The tropic cooling system has always worked, but it does not have a fixed set point like the polar regions. 

The tropics account for most of the energy sent to space, but the Polar Regions are the primary regulators of temperature because of polar sea ice and water. Earth Temperature did cool as more and more warm water was circulated into polar regions from the tropics.
 
Earth temperature data does show that the temperature is regulated.  There is a cooling system that is turned on and off as necessary to keep temperature and sea level regulated.
 
Earth temperature looks exactly like the temperature in a building that is regulated by a thermostat and that has a cooling system that is turned on and off as needed.

The North Polar Region and the South Polar Region are Giant Ice Machines.  When oceans warm, sea ice is thawed and snowfall rates are increased, without bound, until the warming halts and reverses.  When oceans cool, the sea ice extent returns and increases without bound, decreasing snowfall until the cooling halts and reverses.   Look at the data, this is what it tells us.
 
An ice shelf, the size of a state, breaks off and floats into warmer water, melting faster and providing huge cooling while the open water it left behind immediately produces more snowfall to replace the ice. A few years ago, the Antarctica reached its minimum ice shelf extent, since we have been watching with satellites. At the same time, it reached the highest snow volume replacement rate.  The ice that left while the ice donut was shrinking to reach the minimum did much cooling and now the ice donut has grown back and is still shedding ice.  Antarctica will grow and release ice shelves as fast as necessary to keep the south polar ocean temperature bounded. The same thing happens in and around the Arctic.  The Arctic ocean freezes and thaws and the ice shelves around Greenland and the mountain glaciers all grow in warm times and produce more ice that gets dumped into the oceans as the albedo grows to reflect energy that would otherwise produce more warming.

There are ice machines, in the north and in the south that adjust the ice that is dumped into the oceans and adjust the ice that regulates the albedo to keep the polar oceans temperatures bounded near the temperature that the polar oceans freeze and thaw. The ice core data from Greenland and Antarctica both show that this has worked in the same, very tight bounds for ten thousand years.  For the million years before the most recent major warming, this worked, but with wider bounds that increased until, between 20k and 10k years ago, the oceans levels and currents achieved the right values at the right time to support this wonderful new state of the climate that finally allowed people to settle and stay in places where they could live and develop.  For the fifty million years before that, the continents drifted, oceans currents changed and circulated more and more warm tropical water into polar regions and that supported more and more snowfall as more polar oceans could thaw and produce snowfall.

Look at the temperature regulation for the past ten thousand years.
